Vivian Edwards: “Working on Wanna Cuddle was a unique joy, it’s one of my first ventures into capturing wildlife in pastels. Although I’ve painted several tigers over the years on murals, this piece brought a fresh challenge. Unlike the animals I encounter often in upstate South Carolina, tigers are unfamiliar, so I spent a lot of time studying photos to truly connect with the spirit and character of these magnificent creatures. Bringing out the life and personality of an animal I haven’t seen in person is always more challenging, but it’s deeply rewarding. Someday, I’d love to take on the ambitious task of painting a full-body tiger. I know it would be challenging, but it’s a challenge I’d relish.”
Wanna Cuddle, painted by Vivian Edwards, playfully expresses the fierce and wild nature of a tiger with a touch of humor. The painting features a wide-mouthed tiger, its jaws open in what could be perceived as a roar—or perhaps just a big yawn. The dark background enhances the intensity of the tiger’s striking features, drawing attention to its powerful presence. Though the tiger’s ears are pulled back, a typical sign of aggression or alertness, the expression doesn’t appear threatening. Instead, there’s an almost mischievous quality to the tiger, as if it’s caught between being intimidating and playful.
The title, "Wanna Cuddle," adds a sarcastic twist to the scene, humorously suggesting that this formidable creature might not be as friendly as the title implies. The contrast between the tiger’s natural power and the lightheartedness of the title creates a fun, ironic tension in the painting.
Through this piece, Vivian highlights the majesty and strength of the tiger, while also inviting the viewer to see the humor in its pose. The dark, moody background serves as the perfect stage for the tiger's striking form, making it both awe-inspiring and a bit intimidating at the same time.
