Painting: Apple Bandit
Vivian Edwards: “Sometimes inspiration comes in the quiet hours of a crisp fall night. I’d picked apples late in the afternoon, left them piled by the tree, and tucked in for bed without a second thought. But then, in the middle of the night, a lightbulb went off, those apples wouldn’t last till morning! I threw on my coat and boots, grabbed a flashlight, and made my way out, still half-asleep, to the apple tree. And there he was, my little bandit, caught red-handed (or rather, red-pawed) mid-meal. The rustle of leaves betrayed his escape as he darted away on tiny, clever toes. That fleeting moment, this tiny apple thief, was one I had to capture.”
Apple Bandit, painted by Vivian Edwards, is a charming and lively portrayal of a mischievous raccoon nestled inside a basket, clutching an apple in its tiny paws, ready to enjoy a stolen snack. The raccoon’s curious eyes and playful demeanor capture the essence of nature's spontaneity and humor. Vivian brings this scene to life, allowing viewers to feel the raccoon's delight as it embarks on its small adventure, yet then caught in the action.
Vivian celebrates not just the beauty of the creature itself but also the intricate and playful way in which God’s creatures interact with the world around them. The scene serves as a reminder of how the simplest moments in nature are beautiful tokens to be appreciated.
The basket, brimming with apples, symbolizes the abundance of life’s blessings, while the raccoon’s joyful expression hints at the delight we often find in unexpected places. As the raccoon prepares to feast on the apple, we are invited to marvel at the wonder and curiosity present in all of God's creatures, both great and small. This painting captures a moment of capture, reminding us that God's creation is full of life, humor, and blessings to appreciate every day.
